A woman named Emily her driver's license at the County Clerk's office was asked by the woman recorder to state her . She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. "What I mean is," explained the recorder, "do you have a job, or are you just a ... "

"Of course I have a job," snapped Emily. "I'm a mother."

"We don't list 'mother' as an occupation ...'Housewife' covers it," said the recorder emphatically.

I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, , and possessed of a high sounding title like,"Official " or "Town Registrar." "What is your occupation?" she probed.

What made me say it, I do not know ... The words simply out. "I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations."
至今我也不知道，當(dāng)時(shí)是什么因素作怪，我脫口而出：“我是兒童發(fā)育和人類關(guān)系研究員。”
The paused, ballpoint pen frozen in , and looked up as though she had not heard right.
那名辦事員愣住了，拿著原珠筆的手也不動(dòng)了。她抬頭看著我，好像沒(méi)有聽(tīng)清楚我說(shuō)什么似的。
I repeated the title slowly, emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written in bold, black ink on the official .
我慢慢地把我的職業(yè)再重復(fù)一遍，在說(shuō)到重要的詞時(shí)還加重語(yǔ)氣。然后，我驚奇地看著我的話被粗黑的筆記錄在官方的問(wèn)卷上。
"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest,"just what you do in your field?"
“我能不能問(wèn)一下，”這名辦事員好奇地問(wèn)，“你在這個(gè)領(lǐng)域具體做什么？”
Coolly, without any trace of in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn't), in the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out). I'm working for my Masters, (the whole darned family), and already have four credits, (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money."

I felt ! I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another mother."

Motherhood ... What a glorious career! Especially when there's a title on the door.

Does this make grandmothers "Senior Research Associates in the field of Child Development and Human Relations" and great grandmothers " Senior Research Associates"? I think so!!!
這是不是說(shuō)奶奶和姥姥就是“資深兒童發(fā)育和人類關(guān)系研究員”，而曾祖母則是“高級(jí)研究員”呢？我想是這樣的！
I also think it makes Aunts "Associate Research Assistants".
我想，小姨子也因此成了“研究員助理”。
