英文里表達“大人物”的詞有很多，有些一眼能猜出，有些從字面上則很難判斷，比如下面這句話： The old man is still a big noise in island affairs, though he seldom comes into Miranda. 若從字面上講，big noise 怎么也不會讓人聯想到“大人物”，而會讓人想到噪音。這句話的中文意思是：那老家伙在島嶼事務中仍是個重要人物，盡管他很少到米蘭島來。

其它說法還有：big cheese ig gunig shotig wheelig wigvip等。如John wanted to be the big cheese in his club.(約翰想在他的俱樂部里當個大人物。)

英文中還有一個詞是whole cheese，但切不可想成big cheese的同義詞。Whole cheese的意思是以為自己是唯一一個重要人物，但事實并不一定如此，比如： You’re not the whole cheese just because you got all the A’s。(別以為你門門功課都是五分就是唯五的重要人物)。

Big frog 也有“大人物”的意思，但常和in a small pond連用，意思是一個在某個小單位里頗有地位的人物，而到了大地方就顯不出風光的人，比如： “As company president, he had been a big frog in a small pond ,but he was not so important as a mew congressman in Washington.
