1. 表示“別的”“其他的”，主要用于某些詞語之后：
(1) much, little, all(=everything)，a lot, a great deal 等;
Not much else is known. 其他的不太很清楚。
He taught us to put the interests of the people before all else. 他教導我們把人民的利益放在最重要的位置。
There was little else he could do. 他再沒有別的什么可做了。
We don’t know much else about his life. 對他生平別的方面我們知道很少。
(2) 以 -one, -body, -thing, -place, -where 結(jié)尾的詞;
Have you anythig else to do? 你還有別的什么事要做嗎?
Ask somebody else to help you. 請別人幫幫你吧。
You can’t get it anywhere else. 你在任何別的地方都找不到它。
Let’s try something else. 咱們試試別的辦法。
He has nothing else to do today. 我今天沒有別的事要干。
Everything else depended upon that. 其他一切都靠那個決定。
She must have learnt it from someone else. 她一定是從別人部里了解到的。
Nobody else could ever say such a thing. 沒有別人會說這樣的話。
Everybody else but me has gone to the party. 除了我別人全都參加那個晚會去了。
I’m going to take you somewhere else. 我準備帶你到別的地方去。
There was nowhere else for me to go. 我沒有別的地方可去。
You can’t get it anywhere else. 你在任何別的地方買不到它。
We went to the cinema and nowhere else. 我們?nèi)ル娪霸毫耍瑳]到別的什么地方去。
Airports were more closely watched than anyplace else. 飛機場比任何其他地方看守得更嚴密。
(3) who, what, where, how, why 等疑問詞。
Who else was at the party? 晚會上還有誰?
Where else did you go?你還去過什么別的地方?
Who else is there in the house? 屋子里還有誰?
But what else can we do? 我們還能做什么?
Where else did you go? 你還去過什么別的地方?
【注】else 通常不放在 which 之后，如：誤：Which else do you like?
2. else 可以有所有格形式(else’s)。如：
He was wearing someone else’s coat. 他穿著別人的外套。
It couldn’t be anybody else’s. 那不能是別人的。
I’ve taken somebody else’s hat. 我拿了別人的帽子。
You’re wearing someone else’s coat. 你穿著別人的大衣。
Your words carry more weight than anybody else’s. 你的話比任何別人的話都更有分量。
【注】else 一般不用在 whose 之后，遇此情況可用 who else’s。如：
Who else’s fault could it be? 這會是其他什么人的錯嗎?
但若 who else’s 后不接名詞，有時也可用 whose else。如：
I don’t know who else’s [whose else] it could be. 我不知道那是別的什么人的。
3. 與 or 連用，表示“否則”“要不然”。如：
Run or else you’ll be late. 快跑，不要就要遲到了。
Let’s go, or else we’ll miss the train. 咱們走吧，否則就趕不上火車了。
Dress warmly, or else you’ll catch cold. 穿暖和點，否則你會感冒的。
He must be joking, or else he’s mad. 他一定在說笑話，要不就是瘋了。
The book must be here, or else you’ve lost it. 這書一定在這兒，要不就是你丟失了。
若用在句末(即其后不接其他詞)，則常帶有一種威協(xié)的口氣。如：
Give me the money, or else! 把錢給我，不然的話，哼!
