比較級知識點
1. 要注意比較對象的一致性
His camera is more expensive than ____.
A. hersB. herC. it D. its
此題應選A, 容易誤選B, 這里涉及的主要是比較對象的一致性問題。正如我們不能將“一公斤肉”與“一尺布”進行比較一樣，我們不能將“他的照相機”與“她(它)”比較。比較以下正誤句型：
中國人口比日本(的人口)多得多。
誤：The population of China is much larger than Japan. (“中國的人口”不能與“日本”比較)
正：The population of China is much larger than that of Japan. (句中 that＝the population)
解放前我們的生活比牛馬還不如。
誤：Before liberation our life was worse than draught animals. (“我們的生活”不能與“牛馬”
比較)
正：Before liberation our life was worse than that of draught animals. (that＝the life)
美國大部分的公路都比歐洲的寬。
誤：Most of the highways in America are wider than Europe. (“美國公路”不能與“歐洲”比較)
正：Most of the highways in America are wider than those in Europe. (those＝the highways)
2. than any other……還是than any……
Canada is larger than ____ country in Asia.
A. anyB. any other C. other D. another
此題應選A。很容易誤選B, 因為 than any other……這一表達在許多考生腦海里已成了一種“定勢”, 可以脫口而出。而出題者也正是利用考生這一“定勢”設置陷阱。
此題要選A, 這里涉及的不僅僅是一個語法問題, 而且還包括一個邏輯和常識問題。試比較(a句錯, b句對)：
(1) a. *China is larger than any country in Asia.
中國比亞洲任何國家都要大。(因為 China 在亞洲 范圍之內, 所以由此句推出：中國比中國也要大, 顯 然荒唐)
b. China is larger than any other country in Asia. 中國比亞洲任何其它國家都要大。
(2) a. *Canada is larger than any other country in Asia. 加拿大比亞洲任何其它國家都要大。 (由于 Canada不在亞洲范圍之內, 所以無需用 other)
b. Canada is larger than any country in Asia. 加拿大比亞洲任何國家都要大。
以上分析告訴我們：在這類比較級句型中, other的主要作用是排除“自己跟自己比較”的可能。具體地講：如果所談及的人或事物在比較范圍之內則用other, 不在比較范圍之內則不用other。
順便說一句, 除了用other來排除“自己與自己比較”之外, 我們還可用else：This book is moreinteresting than any book else [=. . than any other book]. 這本書比其它任何一本書都更有趣。
3. 你會正確使用比較等級的修飾語嗎
A：He is ____ cleverer than his brother.
B：Yes, but he is ____ the lazier.
A. more, much B. quite, by far C. far, by farD. very, a lot
此題應選 C。其余幾項均有可能被誤選。此題主要考察比較等級的修飾語。不能選A, B, D的原因是more, quite, very等均不能修飾比較級。
far / by far都可以修飾比較級和最高級, 注意以下幾點：
1. far可以修飾比較級和最高級, 且通常前置。
2. by far也可以修飾比較級和最高級, 且可以前置也可以后置。但是, 若置于比較級前, 通常應在比較級前加上the。
正：This is far better. 這要好得多。
正：This is far the best. 這是最最好的。
正：This is better by far. 這要好得多。
正：This is by far the better. 這要好得多。
正：This is by far the best. 這是最最好的。
正：This is the best by far. 這是最最好的。
形容詞和副詞原級、比較級和最高級的常見修飾語：
1. 修飾原級：very, quite, rather, too, pretty, how, so等
2. 修飾比較級：even, much, still, rather, (by) far, not any, a lot, a little, a bit, twice, three times 等
注意：quite 一般不用來修飾比較級, 但有一個特例, 即quite better (指身體情況)。
3. 修飾最高級：(by) far, much, nearly, almost, quite, by no means 以及the very, the second, thenext等
4. 你會使用as……as結構的修飾語嗎
After the new technique was introduced, the factory produced ____ tractors in 1988 as the yearbefore.

此題應選C。主要考察在比較句型中as……as這一結構修飾語的位置。關于這一問題以下幾個方面是命題者經常涉及的考點：
(1) as……as結構有哪些修飾語。主要的有：just, quite, nearly, almost, exactly, half, twice, threetimes 等：
He is just as tall as his father. 他剛好與他父親一樣高。
It’s not nearly so difficult as you think. 這遠不象你想象的那樣難。
(2) 修飾as……as結構的詞語的位置：只能放在as……as結構之前, 絕不能插入其中：
This rope is exactly as long as that one. 這根繩子與那根繩子恰好一樣長。
He hasn’t been quite so unlucky as he pretends. 他不象他裝的那樣不幸。
(3) as……as 結構的其它注意點：該結構一定要用形容詞或副詞的原級, 不能用比較級或最高級。在肯定句中要用 as……as, 但是在否定句中用as……as / so……as均可：
The horse is getting old and can’t run as [so]fast as it did. 這匹馬老了, 不如以前跑得快了。
5. 你能正確理解 no＋比較級＋than 結構嗎
A：Is he very fich?
B：No, not at all. He’s ____ richer than a beggar.

此題應選B。容易誤選A, 誤認為這是一般的肯定句變為否定句, 用not不用no。其實此題要選B, 句意為“他跟乞丐一樣窮”。其中的 no＋比較級＋than 意為“與……一樣不”, 否定兩者, 大致相當于該比較級形容詞或副詞的反義詞。如：
(1) a. This box is not bigger than that one. 這個盒 子不如那個盒子大。
b. This box is no bigger than that one. 這個盒 子與那個盒子一樣不大。(=This box is as small asthat one)
(2) a. He didn’t arrive earlier than Mary. 他沒有比 瑪麗來得早。
b. He arrived no earlier than Mary. 他與瑪麗一樣 來得不早。(=He arrived as late as Mary)
類例：no taller than＝as short as 一樣矮
no more clever than＝as foolish as 一樣蠢
注意以下句型也屬類似情況：no more……than表示對兩者都否定, 意為“同……一樣不”(＝neither……nor)：
He’s no more a writer than a painter. 他不是畫家, 也不是作家(正如他不是畫家一樣, 他也不是作家)。
(=He is neither a painter nor a writer. )
A whale is no more a fish than a horse. 馬不是魚, 鯨也不是魚(正如馬不是魚一樣, 鯨也不是魚)。
(Neither a horse nor a whale is a fish)
6. 你會正確區分older / elder, farther / further嗎

此題應選B, 主要考察older / elder和farther / further的區別：
1. 關于older / elder：
(1) 用于家人之間表示長幼關系, 通常用elder(在美國英語中也用 older)：one’s elder [older] brother 哥哥 / the elder [older] daughter 大女兒
(2) elder只指人不指物, 只用作定語, 不用作表語, 且不用于比較句型, 但older無此限制：
誤：He is elder than me.
正：He is older than me. 他年紀比我大。
誤：Which building is elder, this one or that one?
正：Which building is older, this one or that one?
這座建筑和那座建筑哪座古老些?
2. 關于 farther / further：
(1) 在英國英語中, 兩者均可用來指距離(但美國英語傾向于用 farther)：
Can you go any farther [further]? 你還走得動嗎?
(2) 若用于引申義, 表示“更進一步”、“更多”等義, 則只能用further：
We’ll further discuss it. 我們會進一步討論它。
